Below are some questions that we are often asked about traveling for surgery. Take a look and if you have any additional questions about the process, please contact us at (305) 336-1729 and we’ll be happy to assist you.
How can I schedule a consultation if I am out of state?
We can accommodate a virtual consultation. We use all major video conferencing platforms (Zoom, Facetime, Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp Video, etc.) Our office will schedule that for you.
Where do I stay?
We can help you find nearby hotels or AirBNB accommodations during your stay in Miami. It is recommended that you stay within a 30-minute drive from the surgical center for the follow-up visits.
Should I bring someone, or can I do this alone?
It is required that you bring a friend or relative you feel comfortable with caring for you after your surgery. They will be required to pick you up after surgery and take you to your accommodation. In cases where there is no one available to help you, we can provide you with options for nursing services. The caretaker will receive postoperative instructions, including medication information and helpful tips, during the first few days. By law, patients are not allowed to leave the surgical center alone as they will be under the residual effects of Anesthesia. Typically, we ask the caretaker to accompany the patient during the first 48 to 72 hrs to ensure you have all the help you need.
What is a medical clearance and do I need one?
A medical clearance is a written statement from a healthcare provider, usually your primary care physician or a specialist, indicating that you are in good health and physically fit to undergo the planned cosmetic surgery. This clearance is essential to ensure that any underlying medical conditions are identified and managed properly before surgery, reducing the risk of complications during and after the procedure. If you do not have a primary care provider (PCP), we can set up an appointment for you to help you complete your clearance prior to surgery.
What should I expect on the day of surgery?
On the day of your surgery, you’ll arrive at the clinic at least an hour before your surgery. You will meet the surgical team, review the procedure, get some routine tests done, which include nicotine, alcohol, and drugs, and undergo any necessary pre-operative assessments. After the surgery, you’ll spend some time in recovery before being discharged to go home. Remember, you will need to arrange for a companion to take you home. For major procedures requiring general anesthesia, under no circumstance, you will be allowed to leave the center alone.
Will I need follow-up visits?
Yes, follow-up visits are crucial to monitor your healing process and ensure you’re recovering properly. We will schedule post-op visits for the day after surgery, a week after, 30 days, and three months after. We will track your progress and address any concerns you may have. The first two postoperative visits are done while you are in town immediately after surgery. Follow-up visits can be done remotely.
How long will the procedure take?
The length of time it takes depends on the procedure. Typically, single procedures take 2-3 hours, and combined procedures take 4-5 hours. We will give you a more accurate time during your pre-op evaluation on the day of surgery.
What can I expect during the recovery period?
Recovery from surgery varies from person to person, but most patients can return to light activities within a few days. You will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which will gradually improve. It is essential to follow all post-operative care to ensure a smooth recovery. There is generally no heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks after surgery.
Will I have to wear a “faja” (compression garment)?
Yes, you’ll need to wear a compression garment for several weeks after your surgery. This helps reduce swelling, supports your new body contour, and promotes healing. We’ll provide you with specific instructions on how long to wear it and the garments you need. As part of your surgery package, you’ll be provided with a compression garment as well as other useful items to help during your first days of recovery.
Do I need massages after surgery?
Yes, getting massages is one of the most important things for your aftercare. We encourage you to schedule your massages starting the day after surgery for at least ten days. Our team offers massage therapists specifically trained in post-operative care that will travel to your location and accommodate your schedule.
When can I return to work and my normal routine after surgery?
The time you will need to take off work depends on the type of surgery and the nature of your job. We will provide you with personalized guidance based on your specific situation. We recommend that patients take at least one week from work.
When can I return to my exercise routine?
Depending on your procedure, patients can start to exercise lightly after two or three weeks; we will provide personalized guidance based on your recovery progress.
Can I fly home on an airplane after surgery?
Flying back home is not prohibited but it’s recommended that you stay the first 10 to 15 days for your follow-up visits with the doctor. If you cannot stay the full duration, we will give you all necessary care instructions prior to leaving. Once you’re cleared to fly, you will receive instructions about what to bring for your comfort. Stay hydrated and medicated for pain management. If you received a BBL fat transfer you will need to bring your BBL pillow and talk with the flight attendants about your situation so that they will allow you to get up periodically during the flight. They are accustomed to this request, so don’t be shy.
